I’ve been away from here for too long. I sound like a broken record.

Since my last post four months have passed. I’m mid way through my 9th month on Sweet-potato island. I think 9 months is my limit for living in one locale. The novelty of living in another country wearing off, work drudgery, and general wanderlust have all promoted, in mine mind, that need for me to depart. Taiwan is an excellent country to live, work, and use as a gateway into SE Asia. I simply wish to use the ‘gateway’ aspect.

With that in mind, here is a whirlwind tour of current going ons.

Late May, I spent Dragon Boat festival not going to boat races. Rather, I took a train and returned to Tainan, possibly my favorite city in Taiwan. I stayed with my Chinese teacher and her family. They were very kind and provided everything a poor teacher could want. I got a chance to explore Tainan’s countryside with them, which is flat, much flatter than northern Ohio. Still enjoyable as I saw the second largest temple complex in Asia, had the freshest seafood of my life (I hate seafood, but I loved this!), and got to get out of Taoyuan (where I live).

Forward into June, back to work and the grind. Although I’m learning a lot about teaching, I’ve figured out that teaching English isn’t my calling. Gave my generous 2.5 month warning of my intent to depart. My employers were none too pleased. I’ve grown in the sense that sometime you must declare “I don’t care” and really mean it. With work winding down, I’ve started to reflect on my time here, the people I’ve met, and the kids I teach. Some I’ll remember with a laugh and a smile, others with a shake of the head.

Current plans to return home via numerous countries. Begin in SE Asia, progress west past India and Mid-east to Turkey, train to Athens, flight into Europe, and somehow getting to  London where I’ll eventually fly back to the States. As you can see I don’t have the details of this planned. For now, I’m okay with that. I may miss home, but I’ve got a few things to see before I get back. Cheers.
